For Greater Ontario And Toronto, 2007 was definitely a Cinderella Season marked by fortuitous power shifts among elite ultimate programs, Sarasota drama and World tournament scheduling. Will they be back in the dance in 2008?

At the WFDF World Juniors Ultimate Championships in 2006, Team USA steamrolled the competition in both the Open and Women's Divisions through the Semifinals, winning their games by an average of more than 13 points in games to 17. In the finals, the Open team won gold in similar fashion, dismantling Canada to the tune of a 17-9 victory. The Women won a squeaker over a surprisingly resilient Canadian team on double-game point, 14-13. But that was in Devens, Massachusetts, at a juniors-only tournament on the United States' home turf. In Vancouver next week, the atmosphere will be vastly different, as Team Canada will have home-field and home-crowd advantage, and there will be hundreds of games over the course of the week for the 75 teams in attendance - a far cry from the 12 teams that played at WJUC 2006. Bravo's Will Deaver comments on Year of the Rocket:
Bravo's first year in the quarters was 2001. We lost to Jam
in the quarters that year, but beat New York in the 5-8 bracket, ended
up 6th, and qualified for Worlds (WUCC) for the first time where we
finished 7th.
So, it was actually 5 straight years of quarters
exits...which, while not a bad set of results, got old pretty fast.
- Bravo beat Rhino (not DoG) in the 2006 quarters to get into
the semis for the first time at nationals (beating DoG in the quarters
was 2007)
- This year we also lost Forrest Collins, our defensive
coordinator for the last two years, to retirement, and captain Colin
"JV" Gottlieb to "taking some time off".
- Another significant new addition this year was "Big" Jim
Schoettler, formerly of Jam, and the 1997 Callahan winner from Stanford.
Thanks to Sean McComb for writing in with this Correction of last week's Furious George Article:
Truck Stop was not a "Sarasota virgin" last year as printed in Michael Fiedler's "George is Furious" 5/30/08. It was their second appearance at UPA's.
